La permacultura constituye un sistema proyectado sostenible que integra armónicamente la vivienda y el paisaje, ahorrando materiales y produciendo menos desechos, a la vez que se conservan los recursos naturales (Bill Mollison); es el diseño de hábitats humanos sostenibles y sistemas agriculturales, que imita las relaciones encontradas en los patrones de la naturaleza.
La palabra permacultura (en inglés permaculture) es una contracción de agricultura permanente, como así también de cultura permanente.
